For children, Christmas is synonymous with fun hanging out with family, feasting and sharing gifts. But Christmas should always be synonymous with giving a gift or gifts to the children?

There was a Christmas present or not, Christmas is still Christmas. With the christmas season approaching us fast a hard decision that we face is choosing how gifts will be exchanged. With the large amounts of family, friends, and colleagues we have purchasing gifts for everyone can really get expensive. Thats where the Secret Santa game comes into play, it’s a fun way of exchanging gifts in any group size and means you only purchase one gift instead of many. The only problem here is that Secret Santa may get boring year in and out, hence we look at an Alternative to Secret Santa.Gift Grab: The premise here is simple to that of Secret Santa, each participating person will purchase one gift and will of course wrap it up. All of the participants then sit in a circle and the gifts are put into the middle. Numbered pieces of paper are put into a hat (one for each participant) and everyone picks a a number out (this will be the order they select gifts).

The first person then chooses a gift from the middle and opens it, this will possibly be the gift they end up with. The next person then is able to take the first persons gift or choose another from the middle. This process will continue with each person choosing a gift from the middle of previous participants. In the end each person will end up with a gift, even though you may not get what you want everyone ends up with a gift.

You can set rules which must be followed when purchasing this game, they of course will vary depending on the situation. Examples rules are:

- Gifts must be in specific price range (example: under $20).

- Gifts must be humorous or silly gifts.

- Gifts must follow a specific theme (example: christmas).

- Gifts must be eatable.

You just need to remember that christmas is a time for friends, family and even religion, gifts are just an added bonus and are not really needed to celebrate christmas. Thats why games like Secret Santa and the Gift Grab are great because they are cheap ways of exchanging gifts that bring the fun back into the christmas season.

Keep the Christmas Meal Simple

Something that I notice happens every year at christmas is an abundance of food left over after the christmas day meal. It seems no matter how many people are there for the meal, there always seems to be too much of a spread and ultimately too much left over.It may not seem like a real problem, however why is it that we need such a large spread if it is not really needed. A simple solution that I have decided upon is to put on a smaller yet better quality christmas meal. There is no need for three or four average quality meats when you can have one or two of great quality. Likewise when it comes to dessert, one large rich dessert is often enough, especially when people are full up from the meal themselves.

This year has been a bad one financially for many people, which means some changes really should be made when it comes to christmas spending. The meal is where a lot of the money can be spent so take a leaf from my book and Keep the Christmas Meal Simple.

It seems that every year retailers are bringing out Christmas Merchandise earlier and earlier. Some years you see it all starting to appear in November but in others you see it coming out in September. This seems all good and well on the retailer’s end, but starting with Chirstmas 3 months seems a bit early to me…The fact is that Christmas has become a commercialized holiday, it no longer carries it’s religious meaning to most, and instead is an excuse to purchase items from stores. As Christmas is also the busiest shopping period of the year retailers really want to get as much out of it as they can, starting as early as possible.

One reason for what seems to be an especially early Christmas shopping period start this year can be due to the global recession. Because this year retailers have had a bad year they are looking to start the Christmas period off early in an effort to gain some extra income.

Tip Four – Making Christmas Cards: This activity is a great one for keeping the kids entertained for many hours. By giving the children various craft items (paper, glitter, old Christmas cards, pencils, crayons, etc.) you ask them to create Christmas cards for various family members. It’s a really good way to get them into the spirit for Christmas and family members really do love to receive the home made cards from the kids.

Tip Five – Decorating the House: This is an activity in which you would prefer to supervise. When it comes time to decorate the house you should get out the decorations and help the children to put them all up. With gentle recommendations when you feel an item is put up wrong, and help when height is an issue you can really have a fun time with the kids and they will too.

No matter what you decide to do with the children this Christmas, remember to keep it in the spirit of things and to have fun.
